The Now and Elsewhere piece written by the Raqs Media Collective greatly influenced my idea and execution of this visual/auditory art piece. In a similar installation, Escapement, they used a variety of clocks to denote the measurement of time. They rely on heartbeats to "tell us that we live in time" and connect to the here and now (2010, p.2). Their focus on this time-keeping mechanism allows us to be motivated by innate biological needs rather than the man-made nature of traditional clock machinery. In my piece, I would explore the confinement of time and how as individuals we are tied to the capitalist notion of productivity even when our minds and bodies don't want to cater to these preconceived notions and ways of living. I also hope to challenge how the creation of time has manifested the commodification of our bodies as we move through spaces and operate to fulfill productive time expectations.
